What I Learned In 2010

It will not be pleasant. But it will be meaningful.

Today I learned that in rural China, the primary cause of death in women between the ages of 15 and 34 is suicide.

I know that what we write here trends towards whimsy (if not outright comedy), and self-discovery. In an attempt to pad the stats, I’m guilty of taking even mundane facts and spinning them into essays of, again either personal relevance or the quirks of the universe.

The article I got this from hinted that this statistic might be the result of gendercide throughout eastern Asia, more specifically that women are overcome with grief by having aborted a child or by the inevitable outcome of the girl they carry inside of them. Furthermore, I know why something like this has affected me all day, while on the day of the earthquake in Haiti, a day when everyone else posted prayers and well-wishes, I coldly took to Facebook to lament that I recognized the voice of the actor in a Chilli’s commercial.

It’s a great read, fascinating and sobering. Please read the linked article. I don’t have anything else to add.
